About our school

Ellerston Public School is a small, isolated rural school situated near the source of the Hunter River beneath the Barrington Ranges. There is no township as such and we draw children from a wide geographical area. Families are involved with a mix of rural employment on private properties. There is strong community interest, support and involvement in the school. Our school's mission statement is Preparing our children for the future, through individually focussed learning in a caring and safe environment. We have two small classes and an experienced and committed teaching and ancillary staff. We believe we are well able to implement learning programmes that fully support each child's cognitive, social and emotional development.

Ellerston Public School is in the north–east corner of the Upper Hunter Shire, 70 km from the town of Scone. It is a unique small school that is located next to Ellerston Station. The school provides a diverse and stimulating environment where all students receive a relevant and engaging education. The local school community highly values the positive partnership that exists with the school and willingly cooperates in order to assist in a variety of authentic learning experiences for their children. An emphasis on sound literacy and numeracy skills continues to be at the forefront of the education provided to students at Ellerston Public School, with a focus on writing. This has been enhanced by providing opportunities for students to be creative and critical thinkers through STEAM activities. These opportunities encourage students to be problem solvers, who are able to learn individually and collaboratively. Ellerston Public School always encourages its students to strive for excellence. This has been embodied in our school motto – ‘I will try'. Our ongoing challenge is to engage, extend and develop capable students who are fit for ongoing, active and positive contribution to the society in which they live.
